The product
Phantom — a bipedal humanoid robot built for both industrial automation and defense applications. The MK1 (5'9", 176 lb, 44 lb payload) is in production; a ruggedized Phantom 2 is targeted for combat-adjacent missions. Software stack covers VLM/VLA-based perception and control for general-purpose tasks.
The thesis
Foundation is the only U.S. humanoid company explicitly building for the DoD — most peers (Figure, Agility, Boston Dynamics) have publicly disclaimed defense use. Already pulled a $24M Pentagon contract and a Ukraine pilot, with ambitions to ship 10K-50K units by 2027.
How it runs
Vertically integrates humanoid AI models, hardware, and software, then deploys Phantom robots to industrial and government customers with Foundation-run integration, training, field service, and maintenance.
How it earns
Uses a robotics-as-a-service model centered on annual robot leases; Foundation states a roughly $100,000 yearly lease per robot and recurring B2B/B2G contracts. Contract-value and deployment figures are company-reported rather than independently audited.
Why it wins
A U.S.-controlled full stack plus owned deployment support lets one humanoid form factor work with existing human tools and infrastructure across industrial and defense settings, reducing integration burden for early enterprise and government adopters.
