The product
Operates eight commercial reactor units for Alabama Power and Georgia Power: Farley Units 1-2, Hatch Units 1-2 and Vogtle Units 1-4. Southern Nuclear also provides the operating, maintenance, fuel and regulatory experience behind the two newest large reactors in the United States.
The thesis
Southern Nuclear is the operational backbone of the only new large-reactor build the US has completed this century. Vogtle 3 (entered service 2023) and Vogtle 4 (2024) are the templated AP1000 design that any future US fleet build will reference for cost, schedule, and operations. Without their playbook, no one in the new-build wave has anything to learn from.

Southern Nuclear is Southern Company's specialist nuclear operator, running eight units at Farley, Hatch, and Vogtle on behalf of affiliated plant owners Alabama Power and Georgia Power under operating agreements.
How it earns
Its core economics are affiliate operating agreements with Alabama Power and Georgia Power rather than direct retail electricity sales; agreement-level fees and margins are not publicly disclosed. The parent utilities recover approved generation costs and earn utility revenue through regulated and wholesale electricity sales.
Why it wins
Its edge is a more-than-50-year operating base across eight units, including the newly completed Vogtle Units 3 and 4, plus a documented track record of first-of-kind accident-tolerant-fuel deployments that supplies fleet-scale operating and fuel-performance experience.
