The product
Zoo (formerly KittyCAD) builds Zoo Design Studio along with its own CAD kernel, programming language, and ML model. The platform includes Text-to-CAD for generating 3D models from natural language, plus APIs that other hardware design tools can build on top of.
The thesis
CAD software is one of the deepest moats in the legacy industrial stack — and one of the biggest blockers to new hardware companies, because the existing tools are slow, expensive, and built for the 1990s. A modern, open-API CAD platform is foundational infrastructure for every reindustrialization startup downstream.
How it runs
Zoo builds and distributes an integrated CAD stack consisting of its own geometry engine, the text-based KCL modeling language, Zoo Design Studio, the Zookeeper CAD agent, and developer APIs. It serves individuals through downloadable software and cloud services while offering enterprise pilots, private model customization, regulated infrastructure, and API integration.

Zoo uses a freemium subscription model for Design Studio, metered pay-as-you-go pricing for hosted API and MCP operations, and tailored enterprise plans or pilots; exact enterprise prices are negotiated rather than published.
Why it wins
Because Zoo controls the geometry engine, code-native KCL representation, desktop interface, AI agent, and APIs, the same editable parametric model can be manipulated by point-and-click tools, code, or AI and embedded into customer workflows.
